Solar eclipse: Watch at these Arizona viewing parties
The eagerly anticipated solar eclipse is almost here. On Monday, Aug. 21, a total eclipse will sweep across a swath of the United States from Oregon to South Carolina. Arizona is not under the path of the total eclipse, but we'll be able to see a partial version of the dramatic occurrence.
Here are places in the Valley and around Arizona where you can watch and learn.
The Great American Eclipse
What: Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff is hosting a day-long viewing and celebration, including tours, talks and activities. Check out what observatory staff members are doing in Madras, Oregon, for the total eclipse.
When: 8 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday, Aug. 21. Live streaming of the total eclipse over Madras, Oregon, is from 10:19-10:21 a.m. The partial eclipse can be seen in Flagstaff from 9:13 a.m.-12:01 p.m., with peak at 10:34 a.m.

Meteor Crater Solar Eclipse Party
When: Doors open at 7 a.m. Monday, Aug. 21. Get free viewing glasses while supplies last. At Meteor Crater, the partial eclipse will occur from 9:15 a.m-12:03 p.m., peaking at 10:36 a.m.
Where: From Phoenix, take Interstate 17 north to Flagstaff, then head east on Interstate 40 for 36 miles to Meteor Crater Road. Drive south 5 miles to Meteor Crater.
Admission: $18, $9 for ages 6-17, free for age 5 and younger.

Solar Eclipse at ASU
What: The School of Earth and Space Exploration is hosting the viewing event. Peer through a solar telescope. Viewing-safe glasses also will be available.
When: 9 a.m.-noon Monday, Aug. 21.
Where: Hayden Lawn or Interdisciplinary Science and Technology Building IV on the Tempe campus.

Solar Eclipse at University of Arizona
What: Staff members from the Flandrau Science Center & Planetarium on the UA campus host a viewing party. Solar telescopes will be set up, and watch live streams from throughout the country.
When: 9 a.m.-noon Monday, Aug. 21.
Where: On the UA mall in front of the planetarium.

Arizona Science Center Solar Eclipse Viewing Party
What: Enjoy hands-on activities while learning about the eclipse. The first 500 attendees will receive solar-safe viewing glasses.
When: 830 a.m.-noon Monday, Aug. 21.
Where: Arizona Science Center, 600 E. Washington St., Phoenix.
Admission: $18, $13 for ages 3-17.

Chandler-Gilbert Community College viewing party
What: The Astronomy Department will provide solar telescopes to view the eclipse.
When: 9 a.m.-noon Monday, Aug. 21.
Where: Pecos Campus, Ironwood Hall. Chandler-Gilbert Community College, 2626 E. Pecos Road, Chandler.

Prescott Valley Solar Eclipse Celebration
What: The Prescott Valley Public Library and Prescott Valley Astronomy Club host an educational and entertaining look at the eclipse. Viewing glasses will be available.
When: 9 a.m.-noon Monday, Aug. 21.
Where: Prescott Valley Civic Center Amphitheater, 7501 Civic Center Circle.

Great American Eclipse at Wupatki National Monument
What: Rangers talk about the eclipse and offer safe ways to view it.
When: 9 a.m.-noon Monday, Aug. 21.
