JANUARY 27: Colten Moore kicks off the sled as he goes inverted doing a flip across a jump during the Snowmobile Freestyle elimination rounds at Winter X Games 15 on Buttermilk Mountain on January 27, 2011 in Aspen.

ASPEN, Colo. — Attempting to become the first to land a double backflip on a snowmobile in competition, Colten Moore was injured at the X Games and was transported away from Buttermilk Mountain in an ambulance.

Moore, 27, completed the flips in the best trick final on Sunday but over-rotated his sled, causing it to land hard on the belt. Moore bounced off the sled and seemed to be holding his left leg and side as he lie on the course.

ater Sunday, the X Games released a statement saying Moore was being transported to "another facility for treatment and evaluation."

Moore was the second to attempt the double backflip, a trick that hasn’t been landed before as it requires riders to flip their 450-pound sleds twice.

Heath Frisby attempted one earlier in the competition, but he didn’t get as much height as Moore. Frisby, an 11-time X Games medalist, under-rotated, causing his sled to land on his skis and his head to bounce off the front of the snowmobile. Frisby did not take his second run.

Moore, a six-time X Games medalist, broke his pelvis in the snowmobile freestyle competition in 2013.

That crash came shortly after Caleb Moore, Colten’s older brother, suffered an injury that would ultimately prove fatal. Caleb Moore under-rotated on the landing, causing the skis of his sled to plant on the snow. The snowmobile landed on his chest. Caleb Moore walked off the course, but doctors found bleeding on his heart. In the time it took to transfer him to a better-equipped hospital, Moore’s heart stopped and he suffered brain damage. He died a week later at 25 years old.

Colten Moore returned to the X Games in 2014, winning two medals that included gold in the freestyle competition.
