Melvin Ingram, Chargers agree to four-year contract

Melvin Ingram won't be playing on the franchise tag this season after all.

The edge rusher, who had previously been issued the designation in February, agreed to a four-year contract with the Los Angeles Chargers, the team announced Sunday. ESPN reported the deal was worth $66 million, including $42 million guaranteed.

Ingram, 28, has 18 1/2 sacks in the last two seasons, including eight last year, after emerging as a consistent edge presence for the Chargers. Along with defensive rookie of the year Joey Bosa, he's part of an emerging pass rush looking to help turn the team around as it prepares for its first year in Los Angeles after this offseason's relocation from San Diego.

Players issued the franchise tag have until July 15 to reach long-term deals with their respective teams.

Quarterback Kirk Cousins (Washington Redskins), running back Le'Veon Bell (Pittsburgh Steelers) and cornerback Trumaine Johnson (Los Angeles Rams) all remain on the tag. Defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul (New York Giants), defensive tackle Kawann Short (Carolina Panthers) and outside linebacker Chandler Jones (Arizona Cardinals) each initially received the franchise tag but later signed multiyear deals.
