NFL coaching buzz: Latest on job openings, candidates

Five NFL teams have found new head coaches, while the San Francisco 49ers are still searching for one plus a general manager.

Here's the latest on where things stand with potential candidates:

(Note: Assistant coaches whose teams win wild-card playoff games can interview the following week through the end of the divisional playoff games.) 

Buffalo Bills

HIRED: Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott was announced as the new Bills coach.

Denver Broncos

HIRED: Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Vance Joseph will be the new coach. It is a four-year deal.

Jacksonville Jaguars 

HIRED: The team has hired Doug Marrone as its head coach. Marrone served as interim coach when the team fired Gus Bradley during the regular season.

Tom Coughlin, the first coach in franchise history, has been hired as Executive VP of Football Operations and general manager Dave Caldwell had his contract extended.

All three are under contract through 2019.

Los Angeles Rams

HIRED: The Rams made former Washington Redskins offensive coordinator Sean McVay the youngest head coach in NFL history.

San Diego Chargers

HIRED: The Chargers and former Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Anthony Lynn agreed to a four-year deal Friday, per USA TODAY Sports' Tom Pelissero. So one day after the Bolts picked a new city, they've also found a new leader.

San Francisco 49ers

Interviews completed: Former Bills offensive coordinator Anthony Lynn (Jan. 4), who later accepted Chargers job;  Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan (Jan. 6); New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels (Jan. 7), who later withdrew name from search; Washington Redskins offensive coordinator Sean McVay (Jan. 9), who later took Rams job; Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott. (Jan. 10), who was hired by Buffalo; Seattle Seahawks assistant head coach/offensive line coach Tom Cable (Jan. 15)

The GM search: John Lynch was hired in a surprise move after an extensive process.
