Golden State Warriors forward Matt Barnes pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct and was ordered to perform 10 days of community service on Tuesday in a case that arose out of a confrontation at a New York nightclub in December.

Barnes, who was part of Warriors’ championship run, appeared in New York Criminal Court for the hearing where he accepted the plea to the lesser charge, according to New York County District Attorney's Office spokesperson Justin Henry. Barnes was originally charged with assault with the intention to cause injury, a misdemeanor.

The disorderly conduct charge he pleaded to is an infraction, which is akin to a speeding ticket.

“Mr. Barnes was cleared of criminal wrongdoing and has agreed to accept responsibility for the violation,” Barnes' attorney, Alex Spiro told USA TODAY Sports in an email. “He readily welcomed the opportunity to give his time to juvenile justice issues in California.”

Barnes will be allowed to complete the community service in California by the next hearing date on Aug. 29, Henry said.

Police obtained footage that appeared to show Barnes was the assailant in an altercation inside a nightclub. Police received a report that a woman inside the club was choked and two others were assaulted as they attempted to come to her aid.

The incident occurred early on Dec. 5, hours after the Barnes’ former team, the Sacramento Kings, played the New York Knicks.
