Last Sunday turned out to be a good day for the Sussex and Lannon Land O'Lakes Western Division baseball teams. Despite the cold and despite the brisk western winds, the Cardinals and Lannon posted impressive victories.

Sussex, playing against the host West Bend Lithia, scored a 5-1 victory behind the strong pitching of veteran right-hander Travis Thompson.

Lannon, playing at Hartland, posted its first victory of the season as right-hander Nick Erd pitched the Stonemen to a sharp 6-0 win.

Thompson, sporting an ERA of 2.67 after three weeks, allowed a first-inning home run to Ryan Morrison and then pitched scoreless ball in the final eight innings. In that span, he allowed the Litha just four more hits.

The Cardinals had 12 hits in the game. Veteran Todd Johnson and Ryan Hernandez had half of those, each collecting three hits. Seth Kroenke walked four times in the game.

Erd also had a big day on the mound. The right-hander pitched one of his best LOL West games ever, striking out 14 Hartland hitters in getting the shutout.

Erd, Adam Bigus, Don Matovich and Brodie Engle had two hits each for the Stonemen. The winning run for Lannon scored in the first inning off of Hartland starter Carl Mercier.

In the Lake Country Division, Pewaukee is tops at 2-0. The Muskies are followed by Monches, Oconomowoc, Merton and Sussex at 2-1, Hartland 0-3 and North Lake 0-3.

Brookfield Bulldogs and Brookfield Blue Sox are tied for the lead in the Suburban Division at 3-0. Lannon and Menomonee Falls are next at 1-1, followed by West Bend 7-Up 1-2, Menomonee Falls 0-3 and West Bend Lithia 0-3.

Phil Giuffre of Merton leads the batting race with a .692 mark. He's followed by Derek Nelson of Oconomowoc at .636, Nick Heiting of Menomonee Falls at .625, Dan Wnuk of Lannon at .571, Scott Booth of the Bulldogs at .556 and Todd Johnson of Sussex and Matt Parrent of West Bend 7-Up at .545.

TJ Roberts of Monches is the RBI leader, with seven. Jeff Lueck and Booth are next with six each.

Greg Basthemer of the Bulldogs is the ERA leader at 0.90. Brian Henschel of Pewaukee is next at 1.00, and John Arnold of the Blue Sox stands at 1.08.

Erd is the strikeout leader with 25, and Henschel, Blake Hunt of Monches and Sam Mulkey of Merton are next with 20 apiece.

Lannon plays at Sussex at 1 p.m. Sunday.
