The Sussex Cardinals played good enough to win last Sunday afternoon in their season opener at home.
The only trouble was that the Brookfield Blue Sox played just a little better.
In a good pitching battle between veterans John Arnold of Brookfield and Travis Thompson of Sussex, the Blue Sox emerged with a 4-2 victory.
Arnold and Thompson had identical pitching lines, allowing two earned runs, six hits and seven strikeouts. But it was Arnold who grabbed the win.
Nick Schreiber led the Sussex offense with two hits. Newcomer Will Johnson had three hits to lead the Blue Sox.
Sussex will play at home this Sunday at 1 p.m. against West Bend 7-Up.
Other games last Sunday saw Oconomowoc whip North Lake, 15-1, Monches edge Merton, 9-8, Brookfield Bulldogs defeat Hartland, 12-5, and the West Bend 7-Up down West Bend Lithia, 11-0. In that game, 7-Up pitcher Tyler Adams tossed a perfect game.
The Pewaukee at Lannon and Milwaukee at Menomonee Falls games were canceled due to wet grounds.
