In the first full week of the season, the experienced Menomonee Falls boys tennis team made a splash, winning four duals, including three in its section of the Lancer/Bulldog Invitational on April 22.
At the tournament, the Indians beat Beaver Dam (7-0), La Crosse Central (6-1), and West Bend East (4-3). The Indians tied with East for first in their section of the tournament based on the number of match wins.
Coach Matt Andreshak said he was pleased with the grit of his team, especially in the win over East.
"The match of the day took place when the (second) doubles team of Yanick Elter and Connor Bandt defeated the team of Brock Abiero and Hunter Lemler (in) a close 10-7 super tie-break to seal the victory," said Andreshak.
In another hotly contested match, returning Falls first singles state qualifier Alex Budde lost a tough 6-2, 3-6 (10-5 super tiebreaker) to the Suns' Alex Schaetz.
"The tightly matched players battled throughout the afternoon and provided drama at the end of the day as the Falls and East team scores were so close," said Andreshak. "Ultimately, Shaetz prevailed in the third-set super tie-break to set up the drama (at second doubles)."
Also in the East match, third singles player Tim Haspel won an 0-6, 6-1 (13-11) decision.
Going undefeated in doubles action on the day were Bo Siebert and Yanick Elter for the Indians. Also, Collin Fluegge went undefeated at singles. The Indians' dual-match record is now 5-0, which includes a 7-0 Greater Metro Conference decision over West Allis Hale on April 11 and a 6-1 nonconference victory over Milwaukee Rufus King on April 20.
The highlight win over King was a 5-7, 6-0, 6-2 decision by the third doubles team of Connor Barwick and Grant Adams. Budde won a 6-0, 6-0 decision at first singles and the first doubles team of Elter and Siebert pulled out a 7-5, 6-1 victory.
Falls has three duals slated this week, including a visit to rival Sussex Hamilton on Thursday, April 27.
