President Trump lashes out at CNN, network claps back

President Trump called out "fake news" CNN on Tuesday after the retraction of a story about the Russia investigation and the subsequent resignation of three journalists from the network.

CNN took issue with at least part of that tweet, pointing out that it had its "most-watched second quarter" ever.

The president also used the moment to question the Russia investigation-related stories of other news organizations.

On Monday, three CNN journalists resigned after their story on Russian ties to Trump was retracted for failing to meet reporting standards: reporter Thomas Frank, editor Eric Lichtblau, and CNN Investigates executive editor Lex Haris.

The story — which asserted that the Senate Intelligence Committee was investigating a wealthy Russian investment fund "whose chief executive met with a member of Donald Trump's transition team four days before Trump's inauguration" — was published on Thursday and was retracted by late Friday.
