In my long experience, I have learned a few things. There are two kind of people — some lift and others lean.

There was a lot of celebrating on New Year's Eve. I knew this one guy who was paying off a revolving charge account home improvement loan, and to top it off, he had a 48-month car loan and a 30-year home mortgage.

In the good old days, we counted our blessings rather than our calories.

The big trouble with a good education is it really helps you worry about what is going on all over the world.

When I was going on 14, I wanted to go to an all-boys high school, Marquette High School. My mother was against it, so I had to change her mind. I confided in her that if I went to this other co-ed school, that it was a known fact that the boys and girls matriculated together. Worse than that, the boys and girls had to take the same curriculum. And I topped it off with this fact — and worst of all, was all girl students had to show their thesis to their men teachers. And I got my wish to attend Marquette High.

I recently celebrated my birthday, and we had a good part of the family present. Once the last of the party participants had left, I thought I would compliment wife June, saying, "Thanks. I am proud of you, how you handled all the fuss of putting on a party for me."

She looked at me, and complained, "What did you say? I didn't hear you."

So I repeated it, just saying "I'm proud of you."

She instantly came back with, "That's okay. I’m tired of you, too."

Thank goodness the presidential election is over. It just went to the fact that there is nothing so small or unimportant that it can't be fought over.
