SUSSEX - When Sara Liss was first able to open her own salon, it was a dream come true, but it was also for practical purposes.

She was a new mother and with her husband Daren working as a third-shift Milwaukee police officer. It became too hard to meet the demands of a salon schedule, where she often worked until 8 or 9 p.m.

So, when Liss opened Embellish Salon & Spa, N63 W23217 Main St., she knew she wanted her employees to have the same independence she craved as a young hair stylist.

“It’s a rental salon, so everybody rents their own station so they can be entrepreneurs themselves," Liss said. "I want them to also succeed in the hair industry and realize the benefits of working for themselves. A lot of women, and moms especially, want to set their own hours. It’s nice to be your own boss.”

That entrepreneurial spirit is deeply rooted in her family line.

Her father, mother, sister and brother each own their own business; her brother did the flooring in the salon.

Embellish is located inside the new Mammoth Springs development, so the apartment units in the development are just behind the salon.

“The apartments are full here; there’s 125 apartments right in my backyard," Liss said. "The young people living here just love that there’s a salon. I was originally looking to open over at Bistro Z’s, but I like the atmosphere of Main Street; people can walk over; I can open the doors. I just wanted it to have a Cedarburg feel, where it’s more small town.”

While the salon is new, Liss is already an established stylist with more than 100 clients and 20 years of experience in the industry. The salon doors opened on Feb. 6.

The 1,700-square-foot salon features 10 stylist stations, two nail-technician stations for manicures, two pedicure chairs, four shampoo bowls, a treatment room for massages and eyelash extensions — that will be offered once that position is filled — and a front lobby area.

Embellish has an industrial design and feel with high, exposed ceilings that reveal piping and an open-floor concept.

To check out the salon yourself, Liss is hosting a grand-opening event from 5 to 8 p.m. March 10.

"We will have appetizers and sangria and beer," Liss said. "My distributor will be here giving away gift bags with free products and drawings with gift baskets and gift certificates.”
