MENOMONEE FALLS — It's been one year since longtime Menomonee Falls resident Malissa Misch and her business partner Will Stedman launched their mobile self-defense business, MK Protection Strategies.
The successful run they've had in their year-old company opened a new door for the business in the heart of Menomonee Falls.
MK Protection Strategies opened its first permanent studio, N88 W16741 Main Street, on Aug. 1.
"Honestly, we’re looking forward to helping reduce victimization in our community and in the neighboring areas," Misch said. "We’re different because we’re not teaching martial arts where people have to go to these consecutive classes week over week."
Instead, the studio teaches reality-based self-defense that includes lessons on awareness, avoidance, verbal de-escalation and self-defense techniques.
"What do you do if someone comes up behind you and your arms aren’t free?," Misch said. "It’s things like this that people need to know about because we’re constantly hearing about all these terrible things that are happening in the news every day."
In August alone, the studio will offer 25 different courses in firearm training and self-defense workshops that are designed specifically for different groups: women, senior citizens, experienced shooters and more.
Studio hours are 3 to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday. But the course offerings go above and beyond the general studio hours, according to Misch.
Choosing Menomonee Falls
For Misch and Stedman, opening their business in Menomonee Falls was a simple choice.
“My husband and I love it in Menomonee Falls and Bill (Stedman) lives very close by in Lisbon," Misch said. "He’s a full-time firefighter and EMT, so he travels a lot around the area. We both agreed this would be a great location, especially in the downtown area, considering the village is putting a lot of effort into improving the downtown area.”
Along with the classes, the studio will sell self-defense products like pepper spray, personal alarms, stun guns and a variety of other self-defense products.
"We certainly believe that people should be able to use their own mental, verbal and physical strategies, but then there are also tools that can aid in defending yourself as well," Misch said.
Expanding its services
This may be a new step for the business, but the owners already want to expand their services even further.
Stedman is a managing director with Toronto-based Safe International, where he has helped teach 80 high schools and more than 12,000 students in self-defense.
The team wants to continue growing that number by bringing self-defense workshops into local high schools.
"We just want to have people leave our center feeling more confident to defend themselves," Misch said. "I’m so proud to say that through every interaction we’ve had, whether it be the physical self-defense workshops, or the firearms training, it brings such joy to me to know that we’ve empowered one more person to defend themselves and protect themselves and their family."
