Village of Menomonee Falls — The School District of Menomonee Falls has received confirmation from the Department of Public Instruction that it may start the 2017-18 in August.

The DPI has only approved new start dates if school districts have construction projects in the works, which Menomonee Falls does because of the facilities referendum that passed last April; there will be construction for the next two summers at Menomonee Falls High School, North Middle School and Shady Lane Elementary.

But Superintendent Pat Greco said other factors would also be negatively impacted as well if the Sept. 1 start date was maintained for the upcoming school year.

Sept. 1, the typical district start date, falls on a Friday. That means graduation would fall a week later, and the summer session and Advanced Placement schedules would also be negatively affected.

Giving school districts control over when the academic year starts has been a hot topic for a number of years, according to Greco.

"Part of the conversation across the region is it’s been a request for the legislature for the past six years to give local control for the start date being prior to Sept. 1," Greco said.

Here's the new school schedule:

Aug. 28: First day of school 5K-12

Aug. 30: First day of 4K

Sept. 1: No school

Sept. 4: No school

June 6: Last day of 4K

June 7: Last day of school 5K-12

June 9: MFHS graduation
