100 years ago — 1917

Whooping cough was raging in Sussex, Lisbon, Lannon and Menomonee Falls at this time. To counter it, newspaper advertisers were selling a cure, "Chamberian's Cough Remedy."

In Lake Five, Miss Maragret Lilly, born Dec. 2, 1840, in Ireland died June 19, 1917. She was 77 years old and never married. 

50 years ago — 1967

The old-line historic Sussex Malsch Furniture Store was in "liquidation" as a sale was being held after 42 years on Main Street. Actually, there was an earlier start as the Malsch brothers came to Sussex about the turn of the century and had a horse saddlery, harness, blanket store, and a custom-made furniture enterprise going, until they closed one business and started a bigger one.

25 years ago — 1992

Swimming lessons were being offered to Sussex children at the Sussex Swimming Quarry behind the canning company. The Sussex community had been swimming in it since 1916.

The Lannon Fire Department would have the Dark Stars band for its benefit dance.

The Fryda Farm was set to host a Father's Day visit to a Wisconsin Farm.

10 years ago — 2007

Joanne Nolde was in the first class at Hamilton High (four years), and was retiring after 36 more years at Hamilton as an English teacher.

Woodside Elementary School teacher of first grade, Jennifer Butscher, accepted the Walmart and Sam's Club "Teacher of the Year award."

Silver Spring had been blocked for days as a new Silver Spring Wisconsin Central railroad crossing was totally rebuilt.

5 years ago — 2012

The Sussex election headquarters handled 549 new registrations on the day of the recall election for Gov. Scott Walker. Lisbon had an 87-percent voter turnout. Lisbon and Sussex had an almost identical percentage of voters.

The town of Lisbon was seeking a part-time treasurer.
