Village of Sussex - It may still be two months away, but Sussex Outreach Services Executive Director Jennifer Waltz is already anticipating the organization's second move of the year.
SOS will call the new Sussex Civic Center its home as of October.
Waltz said the move would bring “amazing” changes to the center’s day-to-day operations.
SOS’s former headquarters, located on Silver Spring Drive and Main Street, was torn down this summer to make way for a new intersection. As a result, the center has temporarily moved to the same shopping area as the Sussex Pick 'n Save on Main Street. The building owner, Patrick McAdams, is letting SOS use the space for free until the Civic Center move this fall.
With the move, SOS will change in new and improved ways, according to Waltz. This includes the addition of a commercial cooler that will allow SOS to accept more fresh produce, a larger parking lot and a lobby area.
“I think it’s going to be an amazing change,” Waltz said. “On the community side of it, it’s going to give us more visibility. It’s going to help people understand what we do. I’m hoping it will help us generate more volunteers, and we’ll be in such a nice, centrally located spot, so people may find it easier to donate when they’re dropping their books off at the library, or paying their electric bill.”
SOS serves 400 families in the Hamilton School District; this includes Lisbon, Lannon, Pewaukee, Butler and parts of Menomonee Falls.
Two of SOS’s upcoming drives will be Operation Backpack and the Back-to-School with New Shoes Drive.
Operation Backpack was held Thursday, Aug. 4, but Waltz said donations would be accepted throughout the summer.
SOS is holding the Back-to-School with New Shoes Drive in conjunction with the Sussex Shopko. Parents will receive $25 vouchers per child. Vouchers can only be used on shoes, but parents can use multiple vouchers toward one pair of shoes.
“We find out from Shopko when their best sale is in August; that’s Aug. 4-13,” Waltz said. “This is our fifth year doing this. It’s a great program. I know the clients and kids really love it.”
