'Bachelorette' recap: Rachel sends three guys home as finale nears

Justin Kirkland
Special to USA TODAY

Kenny and Lee are at it again with some creative insults as we come off last week’s spelling bee date cliffhanger. Ever imagine that’s where we’d be? Us either. Brian steals the group date rose, but there are still so many roses to go.

There are still a lot of roses, and drama, to get through before the end of this season.

You see, this episode is all about the lingering drama, but before Lee and Kenny go full West Side Story, Rachel has a whole episode to get through. Ten minutes in, Rachel sends Jack Stone, Tickle Monster Jonathan and Iggy on their ways before taking the guys to Norway!

A leap of faith (in heeled boots)

Rachel collects Brian as soon as they land for a one-on-one, and with no time to waste, they head to the top of a gigantic ski jump that they’re supposed to repel down. The date is absolutely bonkers for a number of reasons: (1) they make out mid-air, (2) she’s doing this in high heel boots, (3) the rings on her hand are absurd. But they survive, and Brian’s bravery and vulnerability lands him a rose.

Slow hands

Adam, Dean, Anthony, Peter, Matt, Will, Alex, Eric and Josiah are chosen for a group date, handball experience. We have no idea how it’s played, but it does involve singlets and it’s not hard to watch. The boys came to play at the after party, too, with gifts and free verse poetry for Rachel. And then there’s Peter who makes out with her in a hot tub when no one else is wearing bathing suits. But hey, live your life. It’s Will who lands the group rose, though.

Everybody’s got a dark side

Meanwhile, back at the house, Kenny prepares for the two-on-one by calling his daughter, while Lee prepares by working out in jeans and boots. But when the day comes, they take off with Rachel in a helicopter, and Kenny is already overwhelmed with what seems like a fleeting opportunity. He tries to cover ground while also complimenting Rachel, but when Lee slides in to talk to Rachel, he tells Rachel about Kenny’s “dark side” when he drinks, and LORD, what a terrible thing to do.

The Rankings

Sassy

With nothing to lose on this two-on-one, Rachel pulls Kenny aside to corroborate the story Lee told her. But of course, Kenny pushes back against Lee’s tall tale. It leaves Rachel more unsure than ever. And Kenny? Well, he just walks back toward Lee in full laughter.

Classy

Will is showing up as a true champion—both inside the handball court and out. Maybe the most level-headed guy this season, he took a moment to try and explain to Lee the complex politics of using the word “aggressive” to describe a black man, while also crushing the group date.

(Too) Sweet

Sometimes sugar isn’t a good thing, and Josiah is the perfect example. When getting one-on-one time with Rachel, he says he’d be remiss if he didn’t tell her that he thinks she’s the one he’s supposed to be with. Forever. And ever. Take it down a couple notches, bro.

Sour

Jack Stone, you little awkward gaze of a man. His one-on-one oyster bar date seemed ill-fated from the start, and after their botched first kiss, it's clear it's already over. But their dinner date sealed the deal when Jack Stone said he was falling for Rachel and she said she felt differently.

So with another night ahead of us, we’ll find out what exactly happens between Lee and Kenny, for good.
