The village of Brown Deer will soon be home to the first indoor ice rink in Milwaukee's northern suburbs, Village Manager Tyler Burkart told the Journal Sentinel a few days ahead of announcing the rink on Friday, April 19.

The new rink, to be completed by the winter of 2024-25, will be built at Community Square Park and will be funded and operated through a partnership between the Village of Brown Deer and the Milwaukee Winter Club Youth Hockey Organization, according to a news release Burkart issued Friday. The two entities set a goal of raising $175,000, and said fundraising information and ways to donate will be posted in the near future.

It's not immediately clear whether the $175,000 represents the estimated cost of the rink and whether that amount needs to be raised for the project to move ahead.

The partnership is meant to collaboratively face the unique goals and issues the village and hockey organization experience, according to the release.

Burkart highlighted the village's mission to increase its park usage, introduce new community-building activities to residents and allow folks, "access to recreation all year round," he said.

Though MWC is one of the largest nonprofit and volunteer-run youth hockey clubs in the state, the release said the organization has struggled to meet the growing demands for youth hockey in the Milwaukee area. In particular, MWC has been hampered by the lack of available ice where it could expand programming.
